Sistema Scotland

Sistema Scotland’s vision is to transform lives with music.

Big Noise Raploch (Stirling) and Big Noise Govanhill (Glasgow) are looking for Cover Musicians (Strings) to work as part of a dynamic team delivering a visionary, socially driven children’s orchestra centre.

This pioneering programme drew its initial inspiration from El Sistema in Venezuela and our vision is to transform lives with music. We deliver on our vision through the creation of Big Noise programmes within communities. Since its inception in 2007, the programme has grown and developed into a multi-faceted and immersive music education and social development programme which uses the orchestra as a learning community.  We currently run programmes in Raploch (Stirling), Govanhill (Glasgow), Torry (Aberdeen) and Douglas (Dundee).

By growing children’s orchestras in urban priority areas our mission is to transform children’s lives with music, empower communities and grow future orchestras.

Cover Musicians enable us to continue our core delivery when Musicians are on leave or are unwell.  They also help greatly in the build up to important events when we need extra support to fully prepare the children.

Cover Musicians are required to carry out a variety of roles including supporting or leading sessions, supervising children in the break times and setting up and packing away the orchestras.

Cover Musicians are offered work as and when required by Sistema Scotland on a self-employed basis.  There is no obligation for Sistema Scotland to offer Cover Musicians work, or for Cover Musicians to accept any work offered to them.  Fees are £25 per hour for the first 2 hours and £20 per hour thereafter.

We welcome applications from all nationalities however before you apply, please ensure that you have the right to work in the UK.  For more details on eligibility to work in the UK, please visit If you are invited to interview, we will ask that you bring evidence showing your right to work in the UK with you (photocopies are not accepted).

If you are interested in applying for the role as Cover Musician (Strings), please email your CV and covering letter to, along with details of the names and contact details for two professional referees.  Cover Musicians are offered work subject to PVG check although having a criminal record will not necessarily be a bar to working with Sistema Scotland.

Closing date for applications has been extended to Friday 29th November 2019 at 10 am.

The selection process (which will include a panel interview, a short audition and a demonstration lesson with a group of children) will be held in Raploch (Stirling) and Govanhill (Glasgow).  Interviews are scheduled for Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th December 2019.
