Derek Ball Anguished Bouquets (2008) 3'
Fl Va
Notes: to Rebecca Osborn
Programme Note:
Florid Impressionism collides with angst-ridden Expressionism, or to put it another way, Debussy arm-wrestles Schoenberg. I started this piece intending it to be a gentle pastiche of a French Belle Époque still-life of flowers only to have it hijacked by a progressive serial system which then determined its whole structure in terms of tropes though not always in terms of note order, over which I was allowed some freedom by the stern Austrian!
I wrote Anguished Bouquets for the violist Rebecca Osborn who tirelessly champions the cause of her lovely instrument.
