Derek Ball At The Close: For Piano Duet (1982) 13'
Notes: In memory of A.J. Potter
This piece was one of my responses to hearing of the death of Archie Potter, my composition teacher for years and one of the people originally responsible for persuading me, as a timid youth, away from Donegal and up to Dublin to be a composer. Dr Potter was wonderful in many ways. He was an inspiring teacher, very practical in musicianship, very funny and never short of an anecdote or two from his colourful life.
I suspect he wouldn't have thought much of this piece's pervasive minimalism - one of his main concerns was to keep the audience constantly engaged. In this sense, the piece is very little about Archie Potter and a lot about my feeling of grief.
