The Edinburgh Quartet

Artists | Classical | String Quartets

The Edinburgh Quartet is Scotland's premier chamber ensemble. Its repertoire is firmly rooted in the great classical European tradition of the last three centuries. Additionally it is not afraid to tackle challenging premieres and commissions and was awarded the 1st Scottish Society of Composers PRS award.

Educational projects and workshops, often linked to public performances, have taken the Edinburgh Quartet to three continents. Whether working with schoolchildren who have little or no experience of live music-making, or with young professional performers and composers, the Quartet is equally at home and keen to help. Workshops are regularly held for the students of the Ian Tomlin School of Music, Napier University, and at the University of Edinburgh. The Quartet is presently collaborating with composer Kenneth Dempster in his children's opera project "Faraway Pictures", based upon the story of the islanders of St. Kilda.

The Edinburgh Quartet has also recently been busy in the production of recordings, making many acclaimed CDs. Coming soon will be the complete string quartets of Hans Gal, and a diverse CD bringing together through the support of Marie Curie Cancer Care and the resources of Napier University the boys of the Edinburgh Quartet and Lindsay Davidson (Lowland, Borders and full Highland Bagpipes).
