Robert Irvine

Born Glasgow 1963. Scholarship to RCM aged 16. Studied with Christopher Bunting and Amaryllis Fleming. Won major prizes in chamber music and solo playing. Further studies with William Pleeth and Pierre Fournier. Joined the Philharmonia as sub principal cello. Extensive work at Aldeburgh, formed the Brindisi String Quartet and worked closely with Sir Peter Pears as continuo cellist and principal cellist of the Britten Pears Orchestra. Toured Europe with the Brindisi. 1988, principal cello Academy of St.Martin In The Fields. 1990, returned to Scotland, principal cellist Scottish Opera. Founded Chamber Group of Scotland with James MacMillan and Sally Beamish. Professor of cello at RSAMD and Glasgow University.
