This five-day summer school is for young people aged 12–14 who are interested in musical theatre and want to do something creative this summer.
As musical theatre is a multi-disciplinary art form, students will have classes from experienced tutors in areas of voice, dance and acting. The week will be heavily based on devising and creating their own work as well as developing a basic knowledge and understanding of musical theatre skills.
Using improvisation exercises, the students will explore and develop their own voice. Students will be taught how to safely explore their vocal range. This will then be incorporated into various different singing styles.
As a key element of musical theatre, students will participate in daily dance/physical classes and exercises. The style of dance explored will depend entirely upon the outcome of the students devising work, however, all students will participate in basic jazz class to enable them to develop their skills.
Using a stimulus, the class will work together to create their own piece of musical theatre which will be performed on the last day of the summer school in the Royal Conservatoire.
By the end of this five-day course, students will have:
- used practical exercises to develop skills in acting, singing and dance
- explored creative methods of interpreting musical theatre
- worked with contrasting music across different styles to respond to the stimulus
- devised a performance using creative ideas developed in the group
