Originally from Lancashire, Katie is a music practitioner and educator in Edinburgh and the surrounding areas. Her work ranges from private piano and music theory lessons to community one on one sessions, group sessions and school projects through Drake Music Scotland, winners of the Scottish Charity of the Year award 2019. Through Drake, Katie works with vulnerable adults and children with developmental disabilities. Katie is the composer of The Cat’s Pyjamas, a collection of intermediate jazz and modern piano pieces.
The Cat’s Pyjamas was born out of Katie’s love of jazz, funk and soul. As a piano teacher, Katie felt there was a lack of quality repertoire that suits the needs of students at an intermediate level. Wanting more challenging but accessible music, with fun jazz and contemporary themes that are satisfying to hear and play, The Cat’s Pyjamas was created. The collection has a focus on rhythmic practice, with plenty of helpful tips throughout. It is an ideal educational tool for both students and teachers.
Katie graduated from Durham University in 2012 with a BA(Hons) in Music. After making the move to Scotland, her work has been focused on community music. Alongside her private teaching and work with Drake Music Scotland, Katie has also led The Welcoming Choir; affiliated with the Welcoming Association, providing a space for locals and migrants to integrate through music. Katie also has experience in arranging choir scores and charts for local bands.
