Grieg 100 concert series: Essential Grieg
Jane Irwin, Alexander Janiczek, Graeme McNaught

Grand Hall, City Halls, Glasgow - £15 (£12)
Booking: Glasgow City Halls - 0141 353 8000

How better to represent the essence of Grieg in this final programme of the series than through those works hand picked by the master himself. On 30th November 1897 Grieg gave a concert in Edinburgh, his one and only appearance in Scotland, homeland of his great grandfather, Alexander. Madame Medora Henson sang, Mr Johannes Wolff played the violin. The ever popular Holberg Suite, in its original piano version, and the great C minor violin sonata are partnered by instrumental miniatures and some of his most haunting and best loved songs.

Grieg 100 concert series: Encounters
Robert Irvine, Graeme McNaught

Edinburgh Queens Hall - £10 (£8)
Booking: Queen's Hall - 01369 702800

Recycled Grieg fragments and contemporary jazz provide the focus for this programme, given by the ever eclectic Mr McFall’s Chamber. Scottish composer, James Clapperton bases his new work on an unfinished piano quintet movement by Grieg. It combines Norwegian folk elements with “a series of musical memory traces based upon certain rhythmic and harmonic cells taken from the Grieg.” Another new piece is by contemporary Norwegian composer and percussionist Thomas Strǿnen, for string quartet and jazz percussion. Pure Grieg, for piano and strings, completes the set. An unlikely marriage of cultures and musical idioms, this is Grieg 100 at its most edgy.
