Derek Ball: Working Through (viola and cello) [download]
Composed 2001, revised 2016. ? Choice of options and sizes: full length option 1; half-length option 1; full-length option 2.
Duration of full-length pieces: about 10 minutes.
Working Through holds the record for being the most re-arranged of all my pieces. It’s different each time it appears, and there have been about 20 other incarnations, ranging from keyboard solo to 8-guitar group.
The structure of the piece is quite simple. The idea contained in the first 2 bars occurs 48 times, each occurrence being similar to ?but not identical with all the others. Think of it as being like a gem with 48 facets each of which you inspect in turn. Alternatively, in keeping with the psychoanalytic nature of the title, think of the first 2-bar phrase as the ‘insight’ which is ‘worked through’ in 48 different situations’
