Rory Boyle: A Box of Chatter
Work for wind quartet (flute/piccolo/alto flute; oboe / cor anglais; B flat clarinet; bassoon). Commissioned by the Illuminati Wind Quartet who gave the first performance at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow on 8 June 2009.
- Your Call Is Important To Us
- The Pub Bore
- Whispering Sweet Nothings
The first movement is self-explanatory as anyone who has had to suffer making a telephone call to any company or business will know, and in the ‘Pub Bore’ the cor anglais is the protagonist (with apologies to all cor anglais players – nothing personal). The third movement is a very gentle languid after consisting of only 6 notes with the whole movement being played pianissimo. The dictionary definition of ‘Gossip’ includes ‘idle banter’ and ‘malicious talk’ and both are exploited in this final movement. (Rory Boyle)
