Scottish National Jazz Orchestra: An American Adventure @ Queen's Hall, Edinburgh
Sep 27 @ 7:30 pm

The SNJO is joined by saxophonist Bill Evans and invite you to take a musical expedition across America from north to south and east to west. Along the way, jazz meets up with bluegrass, soul, funk and fusion to create a road trip to remember.

Well known for conducting experimental marriages between firmly established but quite distinct forms of American music, Bill Evans’ portmanteau projects have included such unlikely bedfellows as soul and bluegrass, and jazz and country music.

Here he is reunited with the SNJO to perform a new programme of wild-at-heart, cross-genre music in the true spirit of the west and the music and performance are guaranteed to raise the bar again for jazz music in Scotland.

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra presents
The Artistry of Jazzmeia Horn

Grammy nominated vocalist extraordinaire Jazzmeia Horn has a name that speaks for itself and the SNJO is delighted that she has accepted their invitation to visit Scotland for the first time to join them in 3 exclusive concerts of fabulous jazz. One of the most exciting new vocalists in jazz today, Jazzmeia Horn draws on her love for iconic singers of the 1950’s and 60’s like Nina Simone and Sarah Vaughan, and has created a sound that is all her own with stunning vocals, soulful sensitivity, and an infectiously vibrant and vivacious onstage presence. Her superb debut album A Social Call was deservedly nominated for a Grammy Award as Best Jazz Vocal Album and she won the Jazz Journalist Association’s 2018 Up and Coming Musician of the Year.

In Concert with Jazzmeia Horn

“Jazzmeia has one of the best voices I’ve heard in over 40 years” -Jon Hendricks

Jazzmeia Horn is arguably one of the most exciting new vocalists in jazz today.  With stunning vocals, soulful sensitivity, and vibrant onstage presence, Jazzmeia has rapidly gained a reputation as an artist of assured maturity and vocal confidence.  In 2018, her debut album  “The Social Call” was nominated for a Grammy Award as “Best Jazz Vocal Album” and she won the “Up and Coming Musician of the Year” from the Jazz Journalist Association.

‘The most talked-about jazz vocalist to emerge since Cécile McLorin Salvant and Gregory Porter… she’s possessed of a sassy tone in the highest register and an array of nonverbal sounds that add drama, hinting at meanings in the music that goes beyond what fits on the page.’  New York Times

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra is delighted that Jazzmeia has accepted our invitation to join us for 3 exclusive concerts and we look forward to welcoming her to Scotland for the first time and to a wonderful programme of jazz

“Jazzmeia Horn IS the future of Jazz!” – Larry Rosen

“A singer who stands apart from many of her peers because she takes on every song she sings so naturally. Jazzmeia is a performer for whom every word, gesture, and ornament becomes an expression of her total conviction and she completely comes alive in the moment” -London Jazz News
