A woman with a beautiful name, Valentina Tereshkova. A factory worker and amateur parachutist, she was plucked from obscurity by the Soviet government in 1963 to be the first woman in space.

At age 77 she was seen carrying the Olympic flag at the 2014 Sochi winter Olympics in Krasnodar Krai, Russia.

Valentina announced that she would have been delighted to join the ‘Mars One ’mission scheduled for 2022 and would be ‘unconcerned about returning...’
