About
The Scottish Music Centre’s mission is to champion Scotland’s music: past, present and future
The Scottish Music Centre is a nationally and internationally recognised organisation at the heart of the Scotland’s music industry. Based in Glasgow's City Halls, we’re active across all music genres and engage with creative people of all ages and abilities.
From preserving our music heritage with the ever-expanding archive to representing contemporary composers and musicians, we support, promote and champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland’s music community.
We provide essential services to Scotland’s music sector across several key areas and act as a conduit, a catalyst and a connector to those working in the sector and the public at home and abroad.
Archive and Digitisation
The Scottish Music Centre holds the world’s biggest archive of Scottish music, from ancient manuscripts to modern day recordings. Our digitisation programme increases access to these rare materials by making them available online and through digital technology, resulting in tangible outcomes for composers and musicians. We also run a commercial digitisation wing that reunites members of the public with music or spoken word collections that were recorded on older formats.
Knowledge and Information
Through our unrivalled databases and our music catalogues we provide information on all aspects of Scotland’s music to a wide variety of clients and the general public. This facility is increasingly enhanced by our international work and our resulting added reach and connections in Europe and beyond. If you have an enquiry on any aspect of Scotland’s music please get in touch.
Music Infrastructure Support
We support artists and those working in the infrastructure in a number of ways: membership services, website resources such as music news and job vacancies, score-printing and distribution, publicity services, advocacy and promotion, international networking, showcasing opportunities and national investment in venues, promoters, and local freelancers through our suite of youth projects.
Learning and Talent Development
We’re committed to supporting the current and the next generation of emerging musicians and composers. We have special membership packages and rates for SMC members aged 16 and over and we run several renowned talent development projects for young people aged 8-25 using our RFO core resources and support from a wide range of trusts and foundations.
