Cameron Sinclair is an award-winning composer, conductor and performer, whose music has been described by critics as, “brim full of energy and drama”

Cameron Sinclair’s music is influenced by his many years as a performer, touring the world with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Glyndebourne, and has been described as brim full of pulsating energy and drama. Throughout his career he has been fortunate to work with inspirational musicians including Claudio Abbado, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Dame Evelyn Glennie and Gustavo Dudamel. His philosophy seeks to embody Vladimir Ashkenazy’s view of the indivisibility of music-making by continuing to compose alongside performing, recording and conducting in a wide range of styles and genres.

Major commissions include an orchestral work for the Venice Biennale where he conducted musicians from L’Orchestra di Udine as part of Il Terzo Paradiso, a large-scale artistic takeover of the island of San Servolo in collaboration with artist Michelangelo Pistoletto. He was also commissioned to write a work as the opening event of the Turin Festival and used it as an opportunity to bring together musicians representative of the ethnic diversity of the city. Over a period of months, Sinclair worked with Egyptian, Indian, Tibetan and Cuban musicians to create a new large-scale work La Città Invisibile, which was performed with classical chamber orchestra Camerata Ducale at the Teatro Regio in a joyous celebration of cross-cultural collaboration.

For 10 years he was Associate Composer for professional choral group Singscape and wrote choral works for Harlow Chorus, including The Secret of the Universe, which won him a British Composer’s Award. He was also commissioned by them to write a choir and orchestra work, Say I Am You, which was performed by the Britten Sinfonia. Other works have been performed by the Philharmonia, New Noise, Ensemble Bash and Joanna MacGregor, with whom he also collaborated on her critically acclaimed album Neural Circuits. He also appeared with Joanna conducting Nitin Sawhney’s Urban Prophecies at the BBC Proms.

Fascinated by the possibilities of cross-disciplinary work, he has directed collaborations with the Royal National Theatre and Tate Gallery, and worked with scientists on a commission for the Creating Sparks Festival that was inspired by neuroscientists and hearing specialists about how the brain processes sound. He was awarded an International Fellowship of the Arts Council to support his residency at Cittadellarte, where he produced works in association with visual artists that have been exhibited throughout Europe and has also produced several installations with long-standing collaborator Alexandra Julyan for the ISCM World Music Days, Wapping Power Station and Helix Arts.

He is currently working on a large site-specific theatre and sound piece for Aproxima Arts and continues to record with Second Citizen, his new band with Angus Farquhar (Test Department), that fuses energetic marimba playing and electronic music, which was greeted with critical acclaim after their performances for the National Theatre, Scotland and Optimo.
