Jane Serter
Born in Stepney, London, Jane Serter began piano lessons at the age of 8, and began to compose at the same time. At the age of 13 she won a Junior Exhibition for piano to the Guildhall School of Music. Her secondary education was received at Lady Edridge Grammar School, Croydon. On leaving school she attended St. Anne’s College, Oxford University, where she read Modern History. On leaving Oxford, she worked at a variety of jobs – mostly in education, both at the primary level and in adult and further education.
Deciding that she wished to focus on composing, she gained a Master’s Degree in Composition from Manchester University in 1993. She has recently retired from teaching the piano in Leeds.
Her chamber and orchestral music has been performed in various venues throughout the UK. Performances have also taken place abroad, chiefly in the USA and Hong Kong. She has twice been short-listed for the Cornelius Cardew Composition Prize, and is on the short-list for the Society for the Promotion of New Music. She regularly has music performed at the London Festival of Wind Music.
