Morag Johnston

 

Morag Johnston is a classically-trained violinist specialising in Historical Performance Practice. She studied with Walter Reiter at The Royal Conservatory of the Hague in the Netherlands and Veronika Skuplik at the Hochschule für Kunst in Bremen, Germany. She received distinction for her Masters in Musicology from The University of Aberdeen and will begin a PhD there in 2024.

She plays regularly with Ensemble Baroque de Rennes, Ensemble Astrolabe and The Banquet Celeste. Notable projects in 2024 include an opera tour of Purcell’s King Arthur; a tour of Scottish music composed, curated and played by female musicians in Brittany (funded by the British Council); a tour of Bach’s Cantatas with The Banquet Celeste in France and Germany and a three-week residency with Ensemble Baroque de Rennes in Cork, Ireland. Previously she has played with Schirokko Ensemble, Hamburg; Devon Baroque, England and Dunedin Consort (Education Projects), Edinburgh.

A passionate and qualified pedagogue, she has taught at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the Huntly Summer School which she co-directed for 10 years. In 2020, she set up the memorisation project Scottish Whispers which teaches folk music to students all over the world with a unique aural method. 

She won the North Nibley Scholarship and with her ensemble The Brewery Band, The Stroud Green Festival Ensemble Award.
