Phil D’Arcy

Phil D’Arcy is a conductor, violin/viola player and educator based in Glasgow.

After a successful performing career based in London, Phil recently returned to Glasgow to focus on conducting and education work for Sistema Scotland.

He is currently forming a new ensemble with the intention of bringing a range of musical genres including Western classical and contemporary works, to the wider community, while encouraging creativity and engagement, particularly among younger audiences.

As a freelance violist Phil performed with many ensembles and orchestras in Scotland before moving to London to join the BBC Symphony Orchestra. A busy freelance career followed involving performances with most of the London orchestras and opera companies as well as smaller ensembles such as the Nyman band and English Chamber Orchestra.

He has taken part in numerous first performances of contemporary works and has had the privilege to share concert platforms around the globe with world class conductors, soloists and composers including Boulez, Haitink, Lutoslawski, Rozhdestvensky and Rostropovich. Studio work has included recording for Hollywood films and popular music as well as for chamber projects e.g. the quartet 'Lelekovice' by Fred Frith.
