Confluens is a work for violin and piano in seven sections. Three of these are based on traditional melodies associated with rivers known to Robert Burns: Afton, Doon and Nith. The other four are Arran burns known to McLellan: Witch's Pool (N. Glen Sannox), Music of the Waters (Catacol), Arran Gold (Glen Rosa) and Source ('Arran Burn' - Corrie) which represents the source of the poet's inspiration.
Both Burns and McLellan did so much to promote the beauty of the Scots tongue that it seemed apposite to mingle the rivers of Ayrshire and Dumfries together with the burns of Arran in a musical confluence, and a homage to both poets.
